Early life

Lawrence Parker left home as a teenager and lived in a Bronx homeless shelter, where he met social worker and DJ Scott La Rock and formed the pioneering group Boogie Down Productions.

Career

After Scott La Rock's 1987 murder, KRS-One turned to socially conscious "edutainment," releasing influential albums and spearheading the Stop the Violence Movement, then sustaining a prolific solo career.

Major achievements

He is credited with helping define conscious and political hip-hop, and classics like "Sound of da Police" and "South Bronx" remain genre cornerstones.

Legacy

Nicknamed "The Teacha," KRS-One is one of hip-hop's foremost philosophers and lyricists, a tireless advocate for the culture's history and integrity.
