Early life

A Detroit native, Smokey Robinson led the Miracles and became an early creative cornerstone and vice president of Motown Records under Berry Gordy.

Career

He wrote and produced classics for the Temptations, Mary Wells, and his own group — "The Tracks of My Tears," "My Girl," "Tears of a Clown" — defining the Motown sound.

Major achievements

A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Kennedy Center honoree, he was hailed by Bob Dylan as "America's greatest living poet."

Legacy

Smokey Robinson is one of the most important songwriters in American music and an architect of the Motown legacy.
