Early life

Raised in Detroit, Michigan, Berry Gordy worked on a Ford assembly line and wrote songs before founding Motown Records in 1959.

Career

He built Motown into the most successful Black-owned record label in history, launching Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, and the Jackson 5.

Major achievements

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for creating one of the defining sounds of American music.

Legacy
