Early life

Formed in the Hollis section of Queens, Run-DMC paired rappers Joseph "Run" Simmons and Darryl "DMC" McDaniels with DJ Jam Master Jay, managed early on by Run's brother Russell Simmons.

Career

Their stripped-down beats, rock guitars, and B-boy fashion crossed hip-hop into the mainstream; "Walk This Way" with Aerosmith became an MTV staple and "Raising Hell" went multi-platinum.

Major achievements

They were the first rap act with a gold album, a platinum album, an MTV presence, and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction (2009). Jam Master Jay was murdered in 2002.

Legacy

Run-DMC took hip-hop from the boroughs to the world, pioneering the genre's first true crossover stardom and its enduring fashion and sound.
