Raised in Long Beach, New York, Frederick Rubin started Def Jam Recordings out of his New York University dorm room.

He produced foundational hip-hop for Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys, then a vast catalog across rock and pop, from Johnny Cash to Adele.
