Born in Harrisonburg in 1960, the 7-foot-4 Sampson became a three-time National College Player of the Year at the University of Virginia.

The No. 1 NBA draft pick in 1983, he was Rookie of the Year and a four-time All-Star with the Houston Rockets' "Twin Towers."

He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
