Born in Richmond in 1907, Hill graduated second in his Howard University law class, behind Thurgood Marshall.

He litigated landmark school-desegregation cases in Virginia, including Davis v. County School Board, which became part of the Brown v. Board decision.

He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999 for his civil-rights work.
