Early life
Born in Lynchburg in 1964, Melvin earned engineering degrees and was drafted by the Detroit Lions before injuries ended his football hopes.
Career
He joined NASA as a materials scientist, flew two Space Shuttle missions aboard Atlantis to the International Space Station, and later led NASA education.
Major achievements
He is one of the few people to have both been drafted into the NFL and flown in space.
