Early life

Born in Lynchburg in 1858, Glass began as a printer's apprentice and rose to own local newspapers.

Career

As a congressman and senator he was a principal author of the 1913 Federal Reserve Act and the 1933 Glass–Steagall banking reforms, and briefly served as secretary of the Treasury.

Major achievements

His legislation reshaped American banking and central banking for the twentieth century.

Legacy

Glass is remembered as one of the most consequential financial legislators in U.S. history.
