Early life
Born in Lynchburg in 1858, Glass began as a printer's apprentice and rose to own local newspapers.

As a congressman and senator he was a principal author of the 1913 Federal Reserve Act and the 1933 Glass–Steagall banking reforms, and briefly served as secretary of the Treasury.
