Born in "the Slashes" of Hanover County in 1777, Clay studied law and moved to Kentucky, where he rose rapidly in politics.

Career

As Speaker of the House, senator and secretary of state, he brokered the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 and ran for president five times.

Major achievements

His compromises repeatedly held the Union together in the decades before the Civil War.

Legacy

Clay is remembered as one of the greatest legislators in American history and a defining figure of the antebellum era.
