Early life

Born Jordan Houston in Memphis, Tennessee, Juicy J co-founded the horrorcore-influenced collective Three 6 Mafia in the early 1990s with DJ Paul, building the group's dark, hypnotic sound from the city's underground cassette-tape scene. His brother is fellow Memphis rapper Project Pat.

Career

As a producer and rapper, he helped pioneer the crunk and trap sounds before launching a solo career that peaked with the platinum 2013 single "Bandz a Make Her Dance." He also co-wrote and appeared on Katy Perry's number-one pop smash "Dark Horse" and mentored a generation of younger Memphis artists.

Major achievements

He shares Three 6 Mafia's historic 2006 Academy Award for the song "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" — the first won by a hip-hop group for an original song — and notched a number-one pop hit as a co-writer of "Dark Horse."

Legacy

Juicy J connected Memphis's gritty underground legacy to mainstream 2010s rap and pop, and the influence of Three 6 Mafia's production echoes through modern trap.
