Early life

Born in 1790 into a prominent Virginia family, Tyler graduated from the College of William & Mary and entered law and politics young.

Career

After serving as governor and senator, he became vice president under Harrison and assumed the presidency in 1841, firmly establishing the succession precedent.

Major achievements

He oversaw the annexation of Texas, but his independent course led his own Whig Party to expel him.

Legacy

Tyler cemented the constitutional principle that a vice president fully becomes president, a precedent later formalized in the 25th Amendment.
