Born in Culpeper in 1891, Rixey was discovered while attending the University of Virginia and reached the majors without a day in the minors.
Career
A durable left-hander for the Phillies and Reds, he won 266 games over 21 seasons — long the National League record for a left-hander.
Major achievements
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1963.
Legacy
Rixey remains one of the most accomplished pitchers ever produced by Virginia.
