Rapsody

Born Marlanna Evans and raised in Snow Hill, North Carolina, Rapsody discovered hip-hop through her college radio scene at North Carolina State University, where she joined the rap collective Kooley High. She was mentored by acclaimed producer 9th Wonder, who signed her to his Jamla Records and shaped her classic, sample-driven boom-bap foundation.

After a series of respected mixtapes, her 2017 album "Laila's Wisdom" earned widespread critical acclaim, and the 2019 concept album "Eve" — with each track named for an influential Black woman — deepened her reputation as a thematically ambitious lyricist. Her 2024 album "Please Don't Cry" showcased a more personal, vulnerable artistry.

She earned Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song, a rare honor for an independent lyricist, and has been praised by peers including Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z as one of the finest pure rappers of her era.

Rapsody is celebrated as a torchbearer for substantive, technically masterful lyricism and for centering the experiences of Black women, carrying forward the tradition of conscious hip-hop into the modern age.
