Early life

Born Ahmir Khalib Thompson in Philadelphia to a doo-wop singer father, Questlove grew up steeped in music and co-founded the genre-blending hip-hop band The Roots with Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter while attending the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.

Career

As The Roots' drummer and bandleader, he helped build one of hip-hop's most respected live acts and the house band for "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." He is also a prolific producer, DJ, author, food entrepreneur, and film director.

Major achievements

He has won multiple Grammy Awards with The Roots and an Academy Award for directing the documentary "Summer of Soul," and is a bestselling author and respected cultural historian.

Legacy

Questlove is a defining musical polymath — drummer, producer, archivist, and storyteller — who has championed the artistry and history of Black music across media.
