Early life

A Washington, D.C. native and preacher's son, Marvin Gaye began in doo-wop groups before joining Motown, first as a session drummer and then as a star vocalist.

Career

After a run of duets and hits, his landmark 1971 album "What's Going On" pioneered the socially conscious soul concept album, and "Let's Get It On" and "Sexual Healing" defined sensual R&B.

Major achievements

He won Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and "What's Going On" is frequently ranked among the greatest albums ever made.

Legacy

Marvin Gaye expanded the artistic and political possibilities of soul music before his death in 1984, remaining one of its most revered voices.
