Early life

A South Central Los Angeles native, John Singleton studied film at USC and made his debut with "Boyz n the Hood."

Career

He became the first Black director nominated for the Best Director Oscar, and directed "Poetic Justice," "Baby Boy," and co-created "Snowfall."

Major achievements

He was the youngest person and first Black director nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director.

Legacy

John Singleton was a pioneering filmmaker whose work defined Black American cinema before his death in 2019.
