Bun B

Born Bernard Freeman and raised in Port Arthur, Texas, Bun B formed the duo UGK (Underground Kingz) with Chad "Pimp C" Butler in the late 1980s, fusing Southern soul, blues, and gritty street narratives into a sound that became a cornerstone of Texas and Southern rap.

UGK built a fiercely loyal regional following before achieving national recognition through the classic "Big Pimpin'" with Jay-Z, and Bun B sustained a respected solo career after Pimp C's death in 2007. He later co-taught a "Religion and Hip-Hop Culture" course at Rice University and became a beloved cultural ambassador and entrepreneur.

He is regarded as one of the South's most respected veterans, a lecturer, author, and community figure whose influence extends well beyond music.

Bun B helped lay the foundation for Texas and Southern hip-hop's national rise, and his statesmanlike presence made him an elder statesman of the culture.
