Early life
Born Kenneth Brian Edmonds in Indianapolis, Indiana, Babyface earned his nickname from funk legend Bootsy Collins and played guitar in the R&B band The Deele, where he met drummer Antonio "L.A." Reid and began a songwriting and production partnership that would reshape popular music.
Career
Together with Reid he co-founded LaFace Records, launching TLC, Toni Braxton, and Usher, while writing and producing an extraordinary run of hits for Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, Madonna, Mariah Carey, and many more. He also maintained a successful solo recording career and later produced for and mentored younger artists.
Major achievements
He has won twelve Grammy Awards, including three consecutive Producer of the Year honors, was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Legacy
Babyface is one of the most successful and influential R&B songwriter-producers in history, his silky, romantic songcraft defining the sound of 1990s soul and pop.
