Born in Arkansas and raised in Michigan, Al Green found his sound with producer Willie Mitchell at Hi Records in Memphis.

Career

His silky early-1970s hits "Let's Stay Together," "Tired of Being Alone," and "Love and Happiness" defined Memphis soul before he turned to gospel and the ministry.

Major achievements

He won eleven Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and received Kennedy Center Honors.
