A Bronx native and former gang member, Afrika Bambaataa channeled street energy into music, founding the Universal Zulu Nation to spread hip-hop culture.

His 1982 electro classic "Planet Rock" fused Kraftwerk-style synths with funk, helping birth electro and influencing dance music worldwide.

Major achievements

He is credited as one of the founding fathers of hip-hop and a pioneer of electro-funk.
